وأخيرًا أعلن لينوس تورفالدز مطور نواة لينكس عن إطلاق الإصدار 4.0 النهائي من النواة، أبرز ميّزة جاء بها الإصدار الجديد هي إمكانية تطبيق الترقيعات (Patches) على النواة من دون الحاجة إلى إعادة الإقلاع (Live Patching) مما يعني أنّ خوادم لينكس صارت قادرة على العمل طوال الوقت دون الحاجة لإعادة التشغيل، تمّ أيضًا كالمعتاد إضافة المزيد من تعريفات قطع العتاد إلى النواة وتحديث بعض التعريفات الموجودة.
